Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 (NLT)
The first Commandment that God gave to Moses was, “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3, NIV). Yet a lot of us are guilty of putting money before God (trusting in our money more than we trust in God). Many of us spend our lives in pursuit of money, thinking that if we had just a little bit more in our bank account we’d be fine. If the 401k had a little more in it we could retire. If we made just a little more each year we’d feel secure.
This is a form of idolatry (putting faith in money to keep us safe and secure rather than God). Money is a useful tool, but it’s not God. One day all of us will die and no amount of money will prevent that. We need to reverse that mindset and put God before money. As Solomon states in Proverbs 3:9-10, if we honor the Lord with our money, he will take care of us. Many businessmen have learned this too – when God was the senior partner, money came on its own. God blesses those who honor him. Let us honor God with our hearts and minds, and trust in him alone for our needs.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to trust in you and not in money. Help me find the right relationship with the resources you have given to me and put you first. I want to serve you, not my bank account. I ask that you guide me to focus on you and have faith that you will provide for all my needs. Thank you for taking care of me. Amen
