Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. Proverbs 29:25 (NIV)
It is easy to be afraid of man. We worry about what people will think of us. We compare ourselves to others and worry we won’t measure up. This fear can prevent us from being all that God has called us to be. Will people think I’m weird if I don’t participate in the rumor mill or laugh at the inappropriate joke? Will people shun me if I stand up and share my faith?
The downside of fearing man is that we get our eyes on the wrong things. We focus too much on people and ourselves instead of God. When we focus on ourselves, we see our shortcomings. When we focus on God, we see His greatness and ability to help us overcome our weaknesses.
Start with God—the first step in learning is bowing down to God; only fools thumb their noses at such wisdom and learning. Proverbs 1:7 (MSG)
