The Great Commandments

The Great Commandments

Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-30 (NKJV)

The Old Testament has ten well-known commandments and other laws to be obeyed by God’s children. These commandments and laws cover a wide range of topics. In some cases, they are very detailed to help those living under them know how to follow them.

The New Testament has two commandments that summarize all the ones in the Old Testament. We are told to love God with all we have and love others as we love ourselves. By keeping the great commandments of the New Testament, we show our love for God and for others. While the statements are simple, putting them into practice can be difficult. But God will help us live them. We just need to be willing.
