You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin? Romans 2:1,4 (NLT)
The scripture above tells us that God is kind, tolerant, and patient. It then goes on to tell us that His (God’s) kindness is intended to turn people from their sin. Here’s a thought – how would the world be, if instead of condemning others, people extended the kindness to others that God extended to them? Notice God’s motivation. That kindness is designed to turn people from their sin. Sometimes we think that being harsh and condemning others will motivate them to change their actions, but that’s not what God does. Because of the brokenness in the world, God sent His Son (Jesus) to die for our sins. He could have condemned everyone, but He chose kindness (by way of Jesus death on the cross) as the vehicle to release us from our sin. With the motivation to turn people from their sin, how can you use kindness to point people toward God?
