All the Lumber

All the Lumber

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)

A man who passed away had St. Peter meet him at the gate. St. Peter said: “Walk with me if you will. I’ll take you to the house you built.” The man said: “I can’t wait!” They passed a mansion made of stone but with each new house he’s shown they get smaller by degrees. The two stopped in front of a two-room shack. St. Peter said: “Hope you’re happy with that.” The man said: “How can this be?” St. Peter said: “That’s all the lumber you sent.”

The man didn’t know what to say and was blown away. He said: “You mean this is what I deserve?” St. Peter said: “I’m afraid it’s so. It’s too late but now you know that you should have done better work.” The man asked, “You mean not lie and cheat and helping old ladies across the street?” St. Peter said, “Well, that’s a start. Remember that man back in that great big house? He found out early what it’s all about and built that place with his heart. He loved God and his fellow man. He made a stand and was generous with his time, talents and treasures.”

We can choose to build our treasures on earth and leave them all behind. We can also choose to make an eternal difference. When we focus on the plans God has for us in this life, we store up treasures in heaven that will last forever.

Prayer: God, thank you for reminding me to check where my treasures are. Help me to store up treasures in heaven. I want the desires of my heart to bring you glory. In Jesus name. Amen.
