Love with Listening

He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. Luke 24:17-19 (NIV)

When was the last time you stopped to listen – stopped to listen to birds chirping, wind blowing, or the heart of a friend? Most people listen with the intent to reply. When was the last time you listened with the intent to understand? People truly want to be heard, not fixed.

Jesus listened to the men walking along. The men were hurting, downcast, troubled, etc. Jesus walked and the men talked. At that very moment, Jesus’ most important ministry was to listen. What is your most important ministry today? How can you be more like Jesus by listening? Every story matters to God. Whose story will matter to you?

Prayer:
Dear God, so many noises in my world cause me to drown out what people are really saying sometimes. Thinking about my next thing to do or the last thing I did often fills my thoughts. I can’t be the kind of listener that Jesus was without Your help. Will You help me today? Help me God to listen to people’s words and hearts. Help me to be more like Jesus and make listening my ministry today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
