If you drop a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will of course frantically try to climb out. But if you place it gently into a pot of lukewarm water and turn the heat on low, it will float there quite peacefully. As the water gradually heats up, the frog will sink into a tranquil stupor (exactly like one of us in a hot bath), and before long, with a smile on its face, it will unresistingly allow itself to be boiled to death.
Our mistakes can have the same impact on our lives. Little by little we move further away from God and move toward a life of destruction. God can search our hearts and keep us on the right path as long as we are willing and open to his guidance.
Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life. Psalms 139:23-24 (MSG)
