You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14 (NLT)
Have you ever owed someone something and they cancelled your debt? You no longer owed them for the past debt. You no longer have to worry about how you are going to repay what you owe them. You no longer have to deal with the weight of being in debt.
We owed a debt we could not pay. There was a weight hanging over us (even if we did not know it was there) that we could not get rid of on our own. Jesus paid our debt in full. Through His death on the cross, He has the power to cancel our debt caused by sin. Any record of the debt is now gone.
Prayer: God, thank you for the sacrifice of your son on the cross. You cancelled the debt of sin in my life. I no longer need to be weighed down but can live in freedom because of what you have done. Thank you that you have the power to cancel my debt. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
