When Why Comes Before What

When Why Comes Before What

You may think everything you do is right, but the Lord judges your motives.  Proverbs 16:2 (GNT)

“Why do I desire to do certain things?  What motivates me to think or behave a certain way?  I am a good person, so naturally I would do good things.”

We all think we are doing what is right and good but what’s behind our thoughts and actions?  Typically, it is trying to please people, not necessarily pleasing God.  Often in our home/work/relationship/daily life, etc., we make choices that please our family/employer/boyfriend/girlfriend…but where is God in this?

Another person on our “people-pleasing” list is our self.  Ask yourself, “Am I just trying to please myself?  Where is God in this?”  We want God’s favor in all areas of life and (if we are being honest) at all times in life, but how are we living to welcome God’s favor in?  God knows your heart.  God knows what drives you.  God knows you better than you know yourself.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  Therefore, do not worry tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.  Matthew 6:33-34 (NIV)

This was Jesus’ summary of how to live life: Seek God’s will, live God’s way, and the favor of God will be added to you in all areas.

Pray: Dear God, You know me better than I know myself.  You know my heart and motives.  Please help me to evaluate my priorities and help me to put God first in all areas.  Lord, I want Your favor in every part of my life.  Help me to seek Your will, live Your way, so that I can experience Your favor and blessing.  The best life is one lived for You and help me to do that.  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
