For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Romans 6:4 (NLT)
When we come up out of the water during baptism, we are raised to new life. Just as Jesus was raised from the dead and sin was conquered, baptism represents this same new life and victory.
After baptism, Christians may look the same on the outside but the verse above tells us now we also may live new lives. Through Christ we are no longer a slave to sin.
